Like there was any question in anyone’s mind

after yesterday’s post whether I would rent a bike for a week or not?

I went to a few places to inquire about a one day rental and got prices like 200 & 300 THB so I decided to visit the guy I walked past yesterday and he had one left for his 150 THB/day rate (others rent for higher prices for reasons that don’t make any sense to me (They’re Hondas, etc)). After inquiring about a weekly rental, he came down on the price to 130 THB/day for a grand total of 910 THB, or about €19 (€2.70/day) – sorry non-Euro people find a conversion website or App.

This is it.

It’s a Suzuki Somethingorother, while it’s not as good-looking as last year’s bike, so far I think I like it. A big difference is that it’s an automatic. I’m a row-it-yourself kind of guy, so it took me a bit to adjust to someone else doing it for me. Granted, I did have an automatic in Saigon, but there’s so much traffic in that city that you never really go fast enough to get where you’re going to notice some of the differences between automatics and manuals (other than the lack of shifting on the former).

One of the big differences is that you can’t use the gears to downshift and slow yourself down on an automatic like you can on a manual. That’s a bit annoying because it’s what I’m used to doing in both cars and on bikes. However, a good thing about an automatic here is that it’s easier to hold hills at a higher speed than a manual. As with anything, there are plusses and minuses.

Something that this one does have that last year’s Honda didn’t have is a fruity basket on the front. Very useful for carrying things like a few bottles of water (last year I had to bungee them onto the back of the bike) and random rubbish cool stuff I’ll probably buy when I’m out and about.

So, it’s Born to be Mild time again :)

Looks like a lot of fun! I am glad you could afford it. :-)

I returned it today. It was far from the best bike I have rented, but got the job done.
