Today the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics will be chosen and the final candidate cities are Madrid, Chicago, Rio and Tokyo. My choice is Madrid – but for purely selfish reasons.
I want to go and it’s a lot closer to me than the other places and living in the EU, I should get first pick of tickets.
However, let me tell you a secret.
In my heart, I really want Rio to win.
South Africa is hosting the (soccer) World Cup this year and it’ll be the first time that event has been hosted in Africa. I want the same for the Olympics! I want people who have never had them on their continent to have the same opportunity as a lot of the rest of the world. I want them to experience the Olympics like I did in Athens in 2004 and will be doing in London in 2012. So, while I’ll be routing for Madrid, Go Rio! dwells deep within me.
But don’t tell anyone. It’s a secret.
