The term ‘Yo!’ is frequently used to get someone’s attention in the parts of the USA.
Example: ‘Yo Mark!’ – the result being that Mark looks at the person who said it.
There even used to be (or perhaps still is) a Yo Festival in Philadelphia.
So, you can only imagine my surprise earlier this year to find that it is also used in Vietnam to get the attention of ‘westerners’ (usually to attempt to sell them some kind of useless junk). Obviously, the Vietnamese picked up on it from Americans that were there in the 60s and 70s, but it was still quite surprising to hear at first.
