Travel Tuesday – I have never seen the changing of the guard

at Buckingham Palace.

The first time I went to London, my Australian traveling companion and I got up early the next morning and took the bus to the train station (we were elated that it was an old Routemaster and took the train into Central London (we were staying with a friend of a friend in East Croydon) and were determined to have it be one of the first things in London we saw.

After arriving at the station, we made our way to Bucking ham Palace full of excitement. These first time visitors to a city they had always wanted to visit was about to begin with something they had always wanted to see!

You could only imagine out disappointment when we got there and the bobby told us that the guard wasn’t being changed (poor guard) that day. The bobby did because as she saw our faces grow long she said, ‘It’s not being changed because the Japanese emperor is visiting and there’s going to be a royal processional instead.’

Our faces lit up again!

About an hour later, the processional began and not only did we see the queen and her visitor, but also the royal carriages, a marching band, etc!

We we returned to our accommodation after our day of sightseeing, we relayed our story to our host and he said to us: ‘I’ve lived in London all 27 years of my life and I’ve never seen the queen. You two have been here for a day and you’ve already done so!’

We beamed for the rest of the day.

(The other couple of times I’ve tried to see the changing, it was pouring down rain and autumn or spring (cold), so I couldn’t be bothered standing out in it and headed for the warmth of museums instead)
