Utility bill question

Since gas and electricity were included in my rent in my old place, dealing with utility bills is new to me in Germany. So, I thought I’d ask the experts.

My new place is about 50m², evenly distributed on both levels. I’m paying €61/month for electricity and €50/month for gas. When I lived in the US, I only paid for what I used at the end of each month, so the system here is foreign to me. However, the amount I’m paying does seem expensive to me and perhaps it’s too high for someone with my lifestyle.

During the week, I’m usually gone 8 – 20 Mondays – Thursdays and 8 - 14 on Fridays. I also go on holiday for four consecutive weeks at the end of every year (five this year). Nowadays, I’m usually home at weekends and when I am, the radio, TV and/or internet is/are usually on. Breaking it down, my stove is gas and my water is heated by gas (I cook, do the dishes and shower daily), but that’s it as far as I know. Regarding electricity, I make tea every morning and also use my toaster almost daily.

Based on the above, does how much I pay sound bit high to you?

You’re maybe paying an advance payment on your electricity bill, and you’ll maybe get some of it back, but it seems to me you’re using far too much electricity. The average consumption for an one person household in Germany is about 1500 kWh per year . With 726 EUR it seems you are using about 3500 kWh. Are you heating with electricity or are you a compulsive baker?

There is a German website called http://www.verivox.de/ where you can see the cheapest electricity and gas prices for your area.

Btw. your utility company will possibly lend you an energy meter to plug between the socket and your appliance. Google for “Energiekostenmessgerät”.

Quarter, thanks for the reply and links.

I am paying a set amount each month and assume I will get the rest back if I overpay. I just moved into this place a few months ago and have no idea what the electricity and gas companies are basing they’re calculations on, but the monthly amount seems high for a single person who’s not home a lot.

There is no way your bill should be that high. NRW is supposed to be more expensive than Rheinland Pfalz and for the flat I share with my sis that’s 20qm bigger than yours I’m paying €20 less than you per month.

They use the meter readings of the last tennant so if that person went crazy with electricity, you are “paying” for that somehow.

They have that price fixed for a year and you will get what you overpaid back when you move out, I think. I will have to ask someone about that because it could also be that you will get that money back at the end of the year after the yearly “abrechnung”.

Island Girl,

Thanks for that. I figured I was paying a bit too much. I’ve brought the paper they sent me on Sat to work today to have the long words I don’t know translated once a German arrives.

An aside, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen each other. Fancy brunch again (after the Olympics end)? We could send out a few emails and try to turn it into a Brunch-Up.

My understanding is that after 3 months you can have your rates re-evaluated and adjusted. They estimated our electricity at a ridiculous 45 Euro/month when we first moved in and we ended up with a HUGE bill once the meter was read (139sqm and 5 family members).

Gina, apparently the local electricity company reevaluates it’s rates every six months based on the price of oil (?).
