Meet-Up Location round two

Now that we’ve got plenty of places to choose from, let’s determine the location, then after we have that we can work on the date (selecting the location makes it easier for people to determine if they can attend or not).

Here are the nominees:

Nuremburg
Bremen
Berlin
Frankfurt
Wiesbaden
Hamburg

In this round of voting, you can’t vote for your own city. Please pass this info on so we can get as many votes as possible.

As always, here’s our faithful map (click to enlarge).

Here’s the count so far (using the #1 as hash marks and based on the first post):

Nuremburg – 11 (Adam and me)
Bremen – 111 (Christina, Belinda and CN)
Berlin – 11 (Ian, Dixie)
Frankfurt – 1 (Martina)
Wiesbaden – 1 (Rositta)
Hamburg - 1 (Nate)

So far Bremen and Berlin are winning.

Notes:

Andrea, ann and Diane Mandy, please narrow your choices down to one.

G, Claire and Snooker, please choose one that is not your own

Wiesbaden, maybe? The wiki article looks interesting and it is by Mainz, which is supposed to be nice?

Bremen!

I vote for Wiesbaden. I haven’t been there yet but it’s supposed to be lovely.

Well, that’s unexpected. Wiesbaden is tied for first place. Even though it’s only an hour from me, I’ve never been there. I guess the question we have to ask now is if we have an expat there that can show us around (I’ve just discovered that none of the voters live there).

Nuremburg – 11 (Adam and me)
Bremen – 111 (Christina, Belinda and CN)
Berlin – 11 (Ian, Dixie)
Frankfurt – 1 (Martina)
Wiesbaden – 3 (Rositta, G, AmiO)
Hamburg - 1 (Nate)

err I’m going to change my vote to Wiesbaden ;) Don’t scold me!!! lol

Geez, that’s really tough cause even though if it’s Berlin I would have to fly, I loved it there. Okay, for closeness then I vote for Frankfurt. But I can be pretty good with wherever cause I am due for a weekend without the kids :)

Umm… I could show you around Hamburg, if you voted for it. :-)

My Berlin vote still stands though.

Berlin. I’m contrary. :)

I’m changing my vote to Wiesbaden, too
:-)

Oh dear. The still unanswered question is who will show us around Wiesbaden?

Nuremburg – 11 (Adam and me)
Bremen – 11 (Christina and CN)
Berlin – 11 (Ian, Dixie)
Frankfurt – 1 (Andrea)
Wiesbaden – 11111 (Rositta, G, AmiO, Belinda, Andrea)
Hamburg - 1 (Nate)

Nooooo, no Weisbaden! :-0 (No, I’ve never been there, I’m sure it’s lovely)

Being pedantic here:

1. you’ve got Andrea instead of Martina down for Weisbaden.

2. Claire doesn’t live in Bremen so she can vote for it.

3. Nate lives in Hamburg, doesn’t he?

Anyway, you know I’ll most likely be there wherever it happens to be. :-)

Picky Picky..lol. That’ll teach me to try to tally something so early in the morning.

Nuremburg – 11 (Adam and me)
Bremen – 111 (Claire, Christina and CN)
Berlin – 11 (Ian, Dixie)
Frankfurt – 1 (Andrea)
Wiesbaden – 11111 (Rositta, G, AmiO, Belinda, Martina)
Hamburg - 1 (Nate)

According to his blog, Nate lives about as far from Hamburg as Claire does from Bremen, so if one counts, the other does too..lol

@Andrea: Wiesbaden is actually a little closer to Bonn than Frankfurt is :-)

Oh, all right! Thanks for clearing that up.
:-)

(And geez, one of these days I’ll even learn how to spell Wiesbaden)

Bremen’s a short train ride away, I’d be up for that too. I’m flexible on where - but can we soon look at dates, too? I want to do a Bildungsurlaub in Spain this September - don’t want to clash with the expat weekend.

How’s first weekend in October 6 - 7 for you all?

As far as dates are concerned and looking at the near future, July 26 to August 2 would work for me.

It’s better to wait til the location is selected before setting a date because that sometimes dictates who can and can’t go.

In terms of finding someone who knows Wiesbaden, my friend lives there so perhaps I can ask him to show us around if he’s up to it. He speaks English so it shouldn’t be a problem for him.

That’s right, I don’t live in Bremen! (Thanks, Christina!) My vote is for Bremen. Can I make a second? Hamburg would be my second choice as I can also get there easily.

PS I have actually been to all of these cities. I think that is a first. Nuermeburg is the prettiest. Wiesbaden and Frankfurt I find so so

For those thinking about the date, you might want to refer to this post.

I vote for Weisbaden.

Wiesbaden is kicking butt for some odd reason.

Nuremburg – 11 (Adam and me)
Bremen – 111 (Claire, Christina and CN)
Berlin – 11 (Ian, Dixie)
Frankfurt – 1 (Andrea)
Wiesbaden – 111111 (Rositta, G, AmiO, Belinda, Martina, Erin)
Hamburg - 1 (Nate)

Belinda, good deal.

For me it all depends upon the dates, and I am starting to sketch things in for the fall but nothing is concrete for me yet.

May I make one observation about Wiesbaden? I’ve been there and I was under the distinct impression that there were a whole lot of Americans there, mainly because there’s a US Military base in the area. Personally I think this is a huge negative, but I will defer to group consensus in the end.

On the plus side for me, is that I have direct train service to Weisbaden on ICEs, every other hour, from Weimar.

The minus side about Wiesbaden for me is that I have direct train service to any of the other cities on the list EXCEPT Wiesbaden (oh, and maybe Nuremburg - not sure). But we all know how I like to whine. :-)

Adam, Wiesbaden has never been on my list of places to visit, so I hope it’l be a nice surprise.

Christina, you love trains, you know it..lol

All, how long should we leave this up for, or should we just declare Wiesbaden the winner?

I’ll probably be visiting Wiesbaden prior to the meet-up anyway so I can check stuff out and see if there are points of interest before people commit. Perhaps that would be better for everyone?

here is a wiki article if you wanted a quick overview.

I mostly know Wiesbaden for its baths, Sekt (apparently it used to be quite important in the Sekt industry - maybe still is), huge American presence, and the fact that it’s right across the river from Mainz - a town I do know! Mainz has one of the three big old cathedrals built around the same time, the other two being in Worms and Speyer.
Another plus of Wiesbaden is the proximity to the wine-growing region on the north side of the Rhine near Johannisberg/Ruedesheim, if anyone wants to extend their trip to include a bit of looking around over there.
My vote is still for Bremen, though. :)

Can we schedule a train strike again just to make it more random and edgy? :-)

But about dates: early September, anyone?

Ian is trying to jinx it!!! lol

I’m for September. The wine hills will look amazing in the Autumn.

J - my motto this year is “Let someone else sit on a train for 4 hours”. :-)

I think you should perhaps leave it up a while longer so everyone interested gets a chance to vote. I’ll put a post at my blog tonight or tomorrow and direct people over here.

September is fine with me, as is October. No preference, really.

(I thought I left a long, blathering comment here last night, but I guess not)

J - my motto for this year is “let someone else sit on the train for 4 hours!” :-)

I think you should leave this up a while longer and I’ll put up a post today linking to it so those who haven’t really thought about it still have a chance to get in on the game.

Either September or October are fine with me and I’ve still got my fingers crossed for Bremen.

BTW J, if you check your entry on the new-look expat blog ring site (remember them??)
You will see that your link goes to your page, but underneath it says 404 not found. Case you hadn’t seen it yet.

Bremen!

(And can we northern expat bloggers please get our act together and agree on a common candidate. We don’t want to split our votes and see McCain… er, I mean some city in the south win.)

I think I, as well as others, may have misunderstood. I took it to mean that we couldn’t vote in the 2nd round for the city we voted for in the 1st round, so that may explain how Berlin lost so many votes. Anyone want to change their vote back to Berlin? I would, but I’m not allowed to since I live here.

Maybe we should just start all over again! :-) I’d be up for either Bremen or Berlin - doesn’t really matter to me.

Please note the Holidays start September 30th- for me the month of September prior to that would be fine, and if we are by Wiesbaden, the draw is the harvest, and referring to the earlier post on dates, the last weekend in September is probably the best in terms of Harvest season and federweiser wein.
But if you come to Berlin, I have a ready supply of both white and red federweiser here:-)

My vote is up for sale, I mean, um, up in the air…

I’ll go with Bremen.

Why Wiesbaden????

I’ll vote for Nuremburg. Leave it up for a while longer, I’ll post something on my site.

Oh, and I’m in Croatia the first half of Sept, and in the US for all of November.

I posted about it on my blog, too. Go, Bremen!

Berlin. For entirely homosexual reasons.

How come my comments never show up????

OK, since I can’t vote for Berlin … How about Bremen?

Is there anyone among us who lives in or knows Wiesbaden really well who can organise things ahead of time? Otherwise it might be good to call for candidates to host things in their own city.

Hi all,

I’m new here (sorta).

I vote for Bremen out of novelty (to me…never been there). Nuremberg would get my vote for proximity.

I feel kinda odd voting at all, because I only know Christina G out of all of you, and I don’t know the rules (do I have to have attended in the past?), and I of course can’t commit to anything until a date is set…probably much like everyone else. So, kindly ignore me if this is out-of-line.

Those of you coming to the ex-pat thing in Regensburg organized by Christina G later this month: I’m volunteering to make sure the weather will be at least a little better than anything you can get in the 3rd week of November. See you then!

Nuremburg – 111 (Geyer, Adam and me)
Bremen – 1111111 (Cliff, Snooker, Jul, Scott, Claire, Christina and CN)
Berlin – 111 (Ian, Dixie, Headbang)
Frankfurt – 1 (Andrea)
Wiesbaden – 111111 (Rositta, G, AmiO, Belinda, Martina, Erin)
Hamburg - 1 (Nate)

It looks like Bremen is in the lead now. Claire, get your walking shoes and tour guide hat ready :)

Ian, thanks for letting me know about the link. I’ll fix it soon. Belinda’s friend can probably handle Wiesbaden.

Cliff, it doesn’t matter if you’ve attended in he past or not, everyone is welcome.

Christina, no idea about the comments, I’ll look into it when I get internet access at home.

Wheeee! Bremen!

(Comments seem to be working now - I just commented on another post and it went through)

I hereby change my vote to Bremen.

Can I do that? :-)

Bremen for me too… I like Wiesbaden, but I’ve already been there loads of times.

Hehe, our vote rigging seems to be working.

And if you drive to Bremen from the north along the A1, there’ll be free coffee at our place! ;-)

Nuremburg – 111 (Geyer, Adam and me)
Bremen – 111111111 (Ian, Cliff, Snooker, Jul, Scott, Claire, Christina, Cathy and CN)
Berlin – 111 (Dixie, Headbang)
Frankfurt – 1 (Andrea)
Wiesbaden – 111111 (Rositta, G, AmiO, Belinda, Martina, Erin)
Hamburg - 1 (Nate)

Ian, done.

Scott, we done. I do like to travel a bit to Meet-Ups.

This was first posted on 26 May, so I’ll leave it up til this Friday. Just about three weeks should be long enough, shoudn’t it?

Wiesbaden!!

Nuremburg – 111 (Geyer, Adam and me)
Bremen – 111111111 (Ian, Cliff, Snooker, Jul, Scott, Claire, Christina, Cathy and CN)
Berlin – 111 (Dixie, Headbang)
Frankfurt – 1 (Andrea)
Wiesbaden – 1111111 (Rositta, G, AmiO, Belinda, Martina, Erin and Diane Mandy)
Hamburg - 1 (Nate)

Talk about neck almost and neck:
Bremen: 9
Wiesbaden: 7

You can switch me over to Bremen since Berlin doesn’t seem to stand a chance of winning.

I don’t live in Wiesbaden (I was born there) but I have a childhood friend who I’m sure could be persuaded to show us around…ciao

Bummer :( I won’t be able to attend this year since Bremen is gonna win. The train ticket alone is double the price. You all have fun and take photos!!!

Wiesbaden. Wiesbaden. Wiesbaden. Can that count as three votes? :-) I can’t logically find a reason to NOT attend if it’s in Wiesbaden and I haven’t been able to attend a bloggers meet up yet so, once again, Wiesbaden!

Bremen 10!
Wiesbaden 8!

How weird. I just commented right after Tatiana. My comment didn’t show up and her’s is gone!

christina, how odd. I see both of them.

Tatiana, round up three more votes - voting ends at midnight tonight.

Looks like we’re going to BREMEN!

Belinda, perhaps you could find a cheap train ticket at the time gets closer.
