Play ball!

Spring training games are happening in Germany in mid-March. That’s quite unusual. Last year the first one was snowed out around this time.

The Cologne Cardinals played the Neunkirchen Nightmares and both teams played well. It had rained overnight and started sprinkling on the train to Cologne but stopped by the time I arrived. It was a bit colder than my town, so I decided to cycle to Neumarkt and then took the tram to the stadium. It was the first time I had taken the tram, and quite frankly it took close to the same amount as cycling due to all the stops it made.

I watched for two hours and we saw the sun for about five minutes during the first hour, but not at all during the second. The wind picked up and the clouds thickened, so I left at 16h and cycled back to the city - where it seemed to be a bit warmer, most likely due to the concrete moderating the temperature. The ballpark is on a hill in a green area.

After cycling around the city for a bit, I decided to make a contribution to a Native American cause and went to the Hard Rock Cafe for chicken nachos and a beer after watching a juggler for a bit.

I spent the last 45 minutes of my trip cycling along the Rhein promenade before returning to the train station and catching a train home.

The rain held off just about til I got to the train station.

Seriously, their name is the “Nightmares?” I think that breaks the rules of naming sports teams.

Actually, there are teams with worse names out there. I was shocked when I read some of them.
