5 4 3 2 1 Meme

from Canadian-Swiss. Perhaps one of the best memes ever for Expats.

5) Name five things you love in your new country:

This was the toughest part for me. There was a lot I wanted to love about this country before I moved here, but ended up not loving.

  • The region I live in. The Middle Rhein is probably the most beautiful region of the country and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
  • Weizenbier
  • Football (soccer). I had no interest in it until I moved to Poland, but no professional contact with it there. It wasn’t til I came to Germany that I started going to pro games. Now I’m hooked.
  • Cycling. Almost everyone cycles here and it’s become one of my biggest hobbies (when the weather cooperates).
  • Photographic opportunities. Germany is quite photogenic.

4) Name four things that you miss from your native country:

  • Thanksgiving and everything that has to do with the Christmas season - other than the commercialism.
  • Cheesesteaks. Yum!
  • Theme parks. I absolutely love all kinds of theme parks.
  • Second hand bookshops with inexpensive books in English.

3) Name three things that annoy you a bit (or much) in your new country:

Only 3? lol

  • The cloudiness and rain. Even thought the weather has been nice the last week or so, it’s usually not.
  • Lack of diversity.
  • Deutsche Bahn. Too expensive and (more often than not) late.

2) Name two things that surprise you (or surprised you in the beginning) in your new country:

  • After moving here from a very isolated region of Poland, Germany seemed quite like the US, which surprised me.
  • The number of international airports in the area. Frankfurt, Cologne/Bonn and Hahn are all within 70 minutes of me. Dusseldorf is 1 1/2 hours away, Luxembourg is 2 1/2 hours and Brussels is 3 hours.

1) Name one thing that you would miss terribly in your new country, if you had to leave it.

  • Castles. There are tons of castles in the area I live in and I never get tired of looking at and visiting them.

I’m not going to tag anybody, but would like other Expat Bloggers to do this meme and leave a comment when you do.

I think there is a theme park somewhere near Stuttgart! I was cleaning this weekend and came across an ad for it on the back of a Stuttgart map…which I think I then threw away…but anyway, there might be one here if you need one :)

J - I think you absolutely need to get to basel and meet CS and then also go check out the used book stores there!~ I know of 2 possibly 3 and I never paid more than 2CHF for a book..

They were awesome books and I always went home with a ton of books…

So it could pay to visit! Especially since she will be leaving Basel in the future for Canada….

And I so agree with the good points on Germany… :)

I completed this meme:
