‘Ooh, look, the new Volvo!’

Words I never thought I’d say that did actually come out of my mouth yesterday.

Let me explain.

Yesterday this strange phenomenon happened:

While sunrise might not be a big thing to some of you, it is here. Usually daylight happens amongst the clouds, so seeing the sunrise is a treat for us this year.

Wanting to make the most of the unusual sunny weather, I went off cycling for an hour before meeting a friend at our school. A bank near it was having an auto show and we decided to have a look - full well knowing that the purpose of it was to entice people to buy cars. Surprisingly, it turned out to be quite good.

Many different makes were represented and we were able to sit in all of them other than the super-expensive ones. When we entered one of the rooms, the Volvo C30 was on display and that’s when I expressed my joy. Personally, I think the C30 is a very handsome car and hope it sells well. We spent two hours there (click here for photos).

The sun was still shining and the temperature was about 15C, so we went down to the Rhein, where we saw flooding beginning. The Rhein had overflowed its wall towards where it meets the Mosel and saw that the Mosel was raging. Usually it’s quite calm and the Rhein flows quickly, but this time the Mosel was in full force too. The flooding wasn’t too bad, but it got worse while we were there and we assume the situation will continue to deteriorate for a few more days. I’ll be wandering down there and monitoring the situation. Click here for photos.

The worst thing to come of it was this:

The beer garden on the Mosel is the most popular in town and this is the shack that the beer and food is served from. It appears that it was trying to be lifted to safety for when the flood waters came and one end of lift broke. People were devastated and it was quite common to hear ‘Oh! The beer garden!’ when people saw it (it last flooded in 2003).
