A Philadelphia moment

First Union Bank used to sponsor one of the major sporting and concert stadiums in Philly, and it was called the First Union Center. Being as they are (and I don’t mean that in a bad way), Philadelphians nicknamed it the FU Center.

Sample conversation 1:
Person 1: ‘We’re going to a concert tonight, you wanna go with us?’
Person 2: ‘Sure. Where is it?’
Person 1: ‘The FU Center.’

Whenever the subject of banks came up it was common to refer to it as FU.

Sample conversation 2:
Person 1: ‘What bank do you use?’
Person 2: ‘FU.’
Person 1: ‘Is their service good?’
Person 2: ‘Yes, I’m satisfied with it.’

I used First Union Bank when I lived there and have to admit that I loved referring to my bank as FU.

LOL… and if you imagine it said with the typical Philly accent, it’s even funnier.

[...] After all, this is the place that nicknamed an arena the FU Center. [...]
